Winchester Mystery House
San Jose, California
The Winchester Mystery House, located in San Jose, California, is an eccentric and sprawling mansion famously known for its unusual architecture and a century-old legend. Originally the private residence of Sarah Winchester, widow of rifle magnate William Wirt Winchester, construction on the house purportedly continued 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for 38 years until her death in 1922.
Driven by a belief that she was haunted by the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles, Sarah continuously added rooms, staircases to nowhere, doors opening to walls, and windows overlooking other rooms, all in an attempt to confuse or appease the spirits. The result is a labyrinthine structure with 160 rooms, 2,000 doors, 10,000 windows, 47 stairways, 13 bathrooms, and 6 kitchens, along with numerous hidden passages and secret compartments. Today, it stands as a popular tourist attraction, inviting visitors to explore its bewildering layout and delve into its fascinating, if somewhat eerie, history.
All of the artwork shown here was inspired by Haley’s lifelong fascination with the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California. Each image captures glimpses into the wondrously kooky architecture of this many-roomed home. Most of these have been turned into stickers that are currently being sold in the gift shop at this historical landmark.
